Graston Technique® is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions and aid in the restructuring of damaged tissues. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. Moving the instruments over the affected tissues, the clinician feels the tool vibrate as it passes over rough areas in the underlying connective tissue almost as though you were dragging your fingernail lightly across a sheet of sandpaper. The patient feels it as well. Healthy tissues feel smooth under the Graston tool. This rough sensation appears to be due to degenerative change in those tissues which originally consisted of parallel fibers of connective tissue called collagen embedded in ground substance. As a result of repetitive, usually minor trauma, the blood supply to the tissues is impaired, resulting in formation of disorganized tissue where fibers run in all directions. As a result the tissue lacks the strength and functional characteristics of the health tissue resulting in pain with use.
Graston Technique actually breaks down the degenerative tissue and because it causes controlled bruising within the tissue, it restores normal circulation enabling the body to reorganize the connective tissue. Combined with application of ice and stretching following treatment and appropriate exercise to stimulate the remodeling, the degenerated tissue structure is rebuilt to nearly its original state. As the soft tissue disorganization resolves, the vibration originally felt progressively resolves as well, a change that is felt by both the clinician and the patient. Graston Technique is effective for the treatment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint capsules and retinaculum. At Thompson Chiropractic, your speedy and complete recovery is our goal.
